Hi
Server 2012 R2 is supposed to have the option "Protected Network" for VM's, if the virtual network switch fails the virtual machines are supposed to live migrate onto another node. I have observed this not working quite as I had expected.
firstly, if I disable the adapter in ncpa.cpl which is used for the virtual machines (I call mine Public LAN) then there is no live migration at all.
secondly, if i unplug the cable physically, then live migration occurs. I plug it back in, move the VM's back to the original node, and unplug it again, this time it doesn't live migrate. I suspect this is because the resource has had too many failures in it's allotted time-frame. So I tried changing the "Maximum failures in the specified period" to 10 and "period (hours)" to 1, this seems to live migrate now and I can repeat the failures several times until i get bored. However, I am a bit confused as to why the VM doesnt migrate back to the original node once the network cable is plugged back in again, even though "allow failback immediately" is selected for the VM, I have also tried selecting both nodes, the original node, and neither of the nodes as the preferred owners and it still doesnt seem to failback once the public LAN is connected again.
Also, we have a very reliable public LAN switch which never seems to drop out (we only want this feature in case it actually failed), is there any way to tune the detection lower from waiting randomly up to 60 seconds to something lower... maybe 30 seconds?
thanks
Steve
