Upgrade of Integation Services (Windows 2012 R2) on Windows 2008 R2 with Exchange 2013 SP1 DAG fails

$

Here is the scenario:

Legacy Host: Windows 2008 R2

Guest VM: Windows 2008 R2 with Exchange 2013 SP1 DAG cluster.

After importing the VM (2008 R2 and Exchange 2013 DAG) into a 2012 R2 host (Cluster).  (copy VM files to new 2012 R2host) Everything works fine.

Then upgrading "Installation Services" (for Windows 2012 R2 host) on the imported VM runs fine with no errors to the "Restart" prompt. VM than shows: "Configuring Windows updates 32% complete. Do not turn of your computer." Hangs there for about 20 minutes until is says "shutting down". Hangs there for 20 minutes until power off. Restart to normal start; "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turnoff your computer." proceeds slowly to "Configuring Windows updates 32% complete. Do not turn of your computer." hangs there again indefinite. Sometime hangs at shutdown cycle and "Configuring Windows updates 32% complete. Do not turn of your computer." indefinitely.

I moved 20 other machines from a 2008 R2 host to new Windows 2012 R2 hosts all of these machines install the 2012 R2 Integration services just fine on the 2008 R2 VM. Just the 2008 R2 VMs clustered (DAG) and Exchange 2013 SP1 do not take the Integration Services upgrade.

Any advise from Microsoft? I know I could decommission the DAG and Exchange machines and install Integration services on the native box before Exchange and DAG and that would sure work, but I'd rather avoid that amount of work for a simple integration layer upgrade.

Thanks

iscsi initiator question

hello Forum,

i am trying to setup iscsi on vm running server windows2012.

I created a target, assigned disk to it - file on local drive, assigned servers which would access this resource.

Now i try to connect initiator to server. Going to Server manager, Tools, iscsi initiator. i am on screen Iscsi Initiator properties. It does not see any targets and I am stocked since i can't proceed defining HA device which could be later used in a cluster.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

thank you, Gene.

Cluster Aware Updating Fails if Windows Firewall service is disabled

Hi,

I have installed the cluster aware updating feature on a Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster and it fails if the Windows Firewall service is disabled on cluster nodes. If I enable and start the service (even if Windows firewall is switched off) CUA is successful. In our environment we have Windows firewall disabled by default as we use other security mechanisms. Any idea how to overcome this issue?

Taking cluster disk offline made all other resources in the group to go offline.

Hi,

We have three node windows 2008 R2 failover cluster. When we tried to take one of the cluster disk offline from a application and services, it made all other resources in that application and services to go offline even though there was no dependency on this disk. I want to know why it made all other resources to go offline. Can some one clarify please? Is it a default behavior?

Missing disks in a guest cluster

Hello!

There's a guest cluster named GuestCluster which consists of the two VMs (Win2012R2) -  Guest1 and Guest2.

Their  vhdx-files along with the two guest cluster disks (wich are shared vhdx files themselves: GuestQUORUM.vhdx and GuestDATA.vhdx) are located on the single CSV volume1 of the host cluster.

The GuestQOURUM and GuestDATA disks were visible in the ThisPC window and in the Failover Cluster Manager on both VMs (Guest1 and Guest2).

Yesterday I noticed that GuestQOURUM and GuestDATA disks are missing from This PC window on Guest2  although they still show up in the Failover Cluster Manager:

There're no errors in the EventViewer, there are no issues with the guest cluster - but the two disks are missing... ???

Thank you in advance,

Michael

cannot add port rule to NLB

Hello,

I have set up two Exchange 2010 CAS + HUB in a NLB cluster. ( W2K8 R2)

I added some port rules: 25, 587, 995, 993 (All TCP traffic related to email, as you know).

The thing is that I want to add another port rule, and then I go to"Host Properties" \ "Port rules" , and there I see the ones I have created so far,  but the "add" button" is grey , not enabled.

I am logged in as the Domain administrator, and it was me who created the nlb cluster with the same user.

I am new to NLB, so I am probably missing something.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

MSMQ Clustering with load balancing

Hi,

I understand the MSMQ clustering creates an active and a failover node. My intention is to have both active nodes and if one fails the other to take it's traffic. I don't want to waste a machine that is not used 99% of the time. Please let me know what options are available to utilize both machines as well as provide safety in case of a crash.

Thanks!

NLB Unicast and certificate for the machine

Hello,

I have set up a two node nlb cluster, in unicast.

On the other hand, I have a GPO with which every computer in the network gets acertificate from the CA, through autoenrollment.

I am new to NLB , but from what I gather, the CA machine won't be able to issue any certificate to any of the two NLB nodes, because the virtual ip replaces to the actual ips's of the two machines ?. I am a bit confused.

Thanks in advance !!

I have a two node Hyper-V cluster running on 2012 R2 but I can no longer open failover cluster manager on either one of the servers.

When it tries to connect it just fails with:

I've tried both nodes and get the same thing. There is also nothing in the event viewer when this occurs that help me come to a solution

2 Node Cluster with Server 2008 R2 Cluster Disks Show as "Local Disk"

I have 2 Node Cluster with Server 2008 R2 with 13 LUNS presented as Clustered Disks within Failover Cluster Manger.

When view Hard Disk Drives within Windows Explorer 10 Drives show as Type = Clustered Disk and 3 Drives show as Type = Local Disk.  The 3 drives still failover over and seeing any ill effects, but why do they show as "Local Disk".  I wondering if there are configuration issues that could cause these 3 disks to haver failover issues.  How can I change?

Thanks,

Richard

Windows 2012 R2 guest cluster on VMware ESXi.5.5 using EMC NS480 FC San fails persistent SCSI-3 check

The intended setup is to build a Windows 2012 R2 guest cluster across 2 physical WMware ESXi 5.5 hosts using physical RDM luns off the EMC NS 480 presented to the hosts. The 3 presented luns are using GPT partitioning and have been equipped with 1000 MB MSR partitions.  The luns are however failing the pre build validation check. Building the cluster stops and wont finish. I am currently looking for further suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem.

"Packets Received Discarded" high on 2008R2 NLB Cluster

$

Hi

My customer has a five node Windows 2008R2 NLB cluster (running Exchange 2010 CAS servers). The cluster is single NIC, running multicast and is virtualized in VMware. There are around 8000-9000 users connected, mainly Outlook but also ActiveSync and OWA connections

Often on a Monday morning these servers seem to suffer from network problems. Usually one server at a time is affected, and is either not pingable or with large packet loss. Clients are disconnected and the server event logs report issues connecting to domain controllers, DNS servers etc. The server appears to recover but the symptoms either reoccur or move around to another server, until the whole NLB farm is rebooted.

We had this issue last year, always on the first working day of the week until a 5th node was added to the NLB cluster which resolved the issue until now.

One thing we have discovered is when the network problems start the performance monitor counter "packets received discarded" rises sharply on the affected servers. In the most recent occurrence, this counter rose to 3.3 million discarded packets over a couple of hours. At the same time the packets received and transmitted counters fall nearly to zero.

This looks like a load issue to us. CPU and memory looks normal so is there a limit to the number of connections NLB can handle? Are there any other performance counts we should be looking at to resolve this issue?

regards

Nick

NLB configured on two Windows 2008 virtual machines 2nd disappears

I have tried to configure Windows Load Balancing using Microsoft multicast network load balancing (NLB) on two windows 2008 R2 ESX5.1 virtual machines. I am able to configure 2 host on NLB cluster of Server 1. when I logoff and login, the 2nd host disappears in Server and appears in the Server 2. However both the node is still participating in the cluster. What needs to be done to view both the host on the cluster manager of Server 1.

SOFS How many spaces to create.

We are building a 2 node server 2012 R2 SOFS cluster. This will be used for backend storage for existing Hyper-V cluster. The 3 JBODS on the backend have 16 HDD and 16 SSD.

I am wondering if I would get better performance  to create 1 big space/virtual disk (-space for parallel rebuild on both tiers and write back cache) -this should scream right? VS creating 2 spaces and spreading the ownership across the nodes. I am leaning toward creating 2 spaces.

The SOFS nodes and the HV cluster nodes will each have dual port 10Gb RDMA nics.

I will test either way and post results when time allows. Anyone have any wisdom to share?

Thanks for your time.

Hello to all, I have VMWare Host Environment hosting dozens of Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 OSs and would like to know if MS supports virtualizad FailOver Cluster on W2K3 or W2K8 OSs as guest. If possible, please send me MS links that states the eventual support (I searched but didn't find any).
