Hi,
I have just tried to configure 2 node Windows 2008 NLB cluster and I run into problem.
Until now I have successfully installed Windows Server 2003 NLB clusters. I used 2 nic per node and unicast mode.
For example
Node1 Node2
Pub Interface (default) Pub Interface (default)
IP:192.168.1.11/24 IP:192.168.1.12/24
GW: 192.168.1.1 GW: 192.168.1.1
NLB Interface* NLB Interface*
IP:192.168.1.12/24 IP: 192.168.1.13/24
GW:- GW:-
*DNS registration, File Share client and server, NetBIOS over TCP/IP disabled on this interface.
After configuring IP addresses I would run NLB manager and configure cluster in unicast mode.
When I tried this on Windows Server 2008, I could not access NLB address outside local subnet. Only when I configure DEFAULT GATEWAY on both NIC's, NLB started working.
When I run network monitor I notices that in this configuration, Windows 2003 would always respond using Public LAN (source MAC address would be from public NIC), no matter if i tried to connect to Public or NLB IP address.
In Windows 2008 if I tried to connect to Public IP, response packet would had source MAC address from Public NIC and when I accessed NLB address then source MAC would be from NLB NIC. For me this looks like change from 2003.
So how do we correctly configure unicast NLB cluster with 2 NIC's in Windows Server 2008? Do we just add default gateway to NLB NIC?

P.S.
When I tried to search for solution I found that other people had this issue.
How to properly configure NLB cluster in Windows 2008
Network Load Balancing (NLB)
Hi,
I have two Windows 2008 Web Edition 64bit Servers running NLB. Each server has two NIC's and the NIC's are teamed. I can create the cluster with one of the servers just fine, but when I go to add the second one, it says "The specified host is already part of this cluster". I have another set of server in the same setup and NLB is working just fine. Can anyone let me know if there is something I am missing here?
Cheers

Configure NLB on Hyper-V
Hi,
I have2 physical machines. Each machine has 1 Hyper-V machine on with i have to configure NLB.
1. So, i have two machines (VMs actually) that run Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 each with a single Network Interface card.
Say M1 and M2
2. I want to make a two-node NLB Cluster out of these two machines
3. I have turned on the NLB on both the machines from Servermanager.
1st machine is in production. and its IP address like 192.168.1.1 for cluster IP i am using 192.168.1.15. just
want to know if i configure NLB will it maintain current IP that is 192.168.1.1 or will it be lost and get Cluster IP.
pls guide.

Windows 7 & Failover Cluster Manager
Is there an updated version of the Failover Cluster Manager that I can install on my Windows 7 Enterprise that will let me manage a Windows 2012 Cluster?
The current version tells me that the Cluster I'm attepting to manage is not support by this version. I'd prefer not to have to login to the server to maintain the cluster.
IP Address Allocation in Failover Clusters & Services and Applications
Gang*,
Was going through some failover-cluster test configurations, and upon arriving to the point where you need to configure your first service/application for high-availability. I've come to the Client Access Point configuration screen. Here, the open-facing client subnet (10.0.0.0/24), is presented, as all the other networks are either for internal-use only. Okay, cool--moving on!
I got two cluster nodes (clus_node1 & clus_node2, 10.0.0.31 & 10.0.0.32 respectively), that are part of the cluster named SQL2k8R2_Clus.contoso.com (which has a Virtual IP (VIP) of 10.0.0.30.
When I tried to configure my first test service (picked Windows Remote Management for the sake of the exercise), it required me to allocate A NEW IP, I tried to use 10.0.0.30, which I would think would be answering any and all client requests for the high-availability server/service. However when I tried to use it, it's "already used" and not available for the high-availability of this service. Okay--not cool!
So my question is, are dedicated IPs required for each high-availability service/application?? If no, how do you get these high-availabilit services/applications to run under the VIP that is already assigned to the clustered host. This also beckons another questions about computer accounts, if you provide a name for the high-availability service/application...does this create a new DNS host record and associated computer object in active directory?? This seems kind of convoluted...
I'm just trying to learn the design/implementation considerations so I know how to plan accordingly for future deployments. Thanks, in advance, for any help or responses!

Cannot see all folders when accessing a FileServer resource on a cluster
I have a very strange problem. I have a 3 node cluster that is running various clustered resources. One of these is a FileServer resource hosting the users' redirected "My Documents" folders in a share called home$
When I logon directly to the cluster and browse the home$ folder I can see all the folders.
When I browse to that folder from MY machine using the UNC path and specifying the hostname of the node currently owning the resource (e.g. \\ClusterNode1\home$), I see all of the folders
However, when I browse to that folder from MY machine using the UNC path of the clustered resource (e.g. \\FileServerClusterResource\home$), I don't see some of the folders
The permissions are OK and the folders are definitely accessible using my account so why cannot see certain folders under the home$ folder when accessing the FileServer resource using the UNC path of the cluster resource name?
Edit: I should point out that the only share that was created manually was the home$ share. The folders under home$ are created by the system when a user first logs on and "My Documents" is redirected
Edit 2: Something I've just noticed (and maybe it's a coincidence). Almost all of the folders that I CANNOT see are of users who have laptops and, therefore, those folders are made available offline by a GPO

Clustering Kemp LoadMaster VLM-100
I'm curious if I could cluster Kemp LoadMaster VLM-100 to provide HA without having to purchase another license. Naturally they recommend you purchase two licenses and have them run on both boxes but if I can achieve the samething with one since I have clustering, that makes sense.
Would this provide the same high availability? Would love some thoughts on this. I would be using it with Exchange 2010.
Move Hyper-V cluster to new storage
Both nodes have a single dual-port FC HBA. Both ports are currently occupied, but I can easily free one up, to connect the new FC storage (I won't have redundancy, but it should work).
SCVMM 2012 SP1 is available so my current plan of action is:
- connect the new FC storage as above,
- present the LUNs and create new CSVs,
- create a new Quorum disk on the new storage. This is where I'm having trouble with, should I change the quorum settings of the cluster and to what exactly? Or can I just quickly remove the old quorum and present the new one? Will there be any failures if both nodes are up? I imagine the cluster, production should remain unaffected?
- move the VMs using SCVMM to the new CSVs,
- unmap the old LUNs and that's it.
Any suggestions apart from the quorum where I'm a bit confused? Any additional steps, how would you do it differently?
Server 2012, Hyper-V Cluster point moint failure
I have a 6 node Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster. Each node was a fresh install with all local drives formatted and repartitioned during OS install.
The first 5 nodes went great, but the 6th node is causing me some problems.
On the 6th node, Im able to connect to the iSCSI LUNs with no issues. Everything looks great until I add this node to the cluster.
When I add it, the add succeeds, but none of the LUNs are mounted to the c:\ClusterStorage folder correctly.
Instead of showing up in ClusterStorage as a mountpoint for each LUN (6 LUNs in total) they show as folders, and are not accessible. In the Windows Event Logs, for FailoverCluster, Diagnostic it shows the following:
Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering/Diagnostic
Source: Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering
Event ID: 2051
[DCM] failed to set volume mount point, source
\\?\C:\ClusterStorage\Volume4\ target
\\?\Volume{89454e8c-4832-4ad8-a43e-75c4ecab253c}\ error 87
It does this for each of the 6 Luns.
I've tried removing this node from the cluster and reinserting it. Reboots while a member of the cluster, and not the cluster. All Windows updates are applied. Full format and wipe of the server, reinstall of OS and try again, etc. I tried looking on Technet and found some references to this error code but they appeared to be related to driver builds using windows API to use mount points. I haven't written any special drivers or anything unique at all for this cluster. Everything is out of the box Microsoft native drivers.
The server is a Dell PowerEdge R710, same as one of the other nodes in the cluster which is working fine. The other 4 are Dell PE 1950s. The first 5 are working great, its just this sixth one. All 6 servers were reloaded over the course of about a week, using the same checklist, same media, etc. I currently have 72 VMs running on this cluster with 5 nodes, and really looking forward to joining #6.
Anyone have any ideas before I call Microsoft support?
Thanks

Cluster Aware Updating help
Hi guys,
We are configuring and using Cluster Aware Updating to patch our server 2012 clusters. We triggered the run and it managed to patch the servers but failed to restart them. The error is Failed to restart "server": (ClusterUpdateException) Failed to restart "Server": (Win32Exception) Access is denied
==> (Win32Exception) access is denied.
Any one can help us?
Thank you
creating client access point
Hi all.
I've got a test file server cluster up and running on 2012. When creating a new Client Access Point, the wizard will complete but the cluster is then only 'partially running'. If I start and stop role it then becomes available. Any ideas why this happens?
The same MSDTC CID on 2 nodes cluster 2008
My 2 nodes cluster was set up Active/Passive. I discovered BOTH SERVERS have the same MSDTC CID since the target server was cloned from the source server. MSDTC is set up a clustered DTC. I have tried to run this procedure on the target machines:
Use Add Windows Components, and remove Network DTC.
Go to the command line and run: MSDTC -uninstall
Go to the registry and delete the MSDTC keys in HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Software/MSDTC, HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/MSDTC, and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCID (if they’re still there).
Reboot
Go to the command line and run: MSDTC -install
Use Add Windows Components, and add Network DTC.
The problem is the CID comes back to be the same as the source server once I reboot the target server.
Do I need to reinstall MSDTC on both servers?
IF SQL 2008 doesn't use distributed query, can I leave the way it is (Ignore MSDTC PART) and the FAILOVER/FAILBACK still works?
IF MSDTC is set up correctly, shall MSDTC drive. e.g. M drive be online on both the source and the target server or it should be online on the source and offline on the target server?
ThankS,
Melissa
Node IP drops
Nodes randomly losing communication with cluster
We have a 6 node production cluster. We are on Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2. At any time, a node will loss communication with the cluster causing every instance on that node to failover to other nodes. The event logs are very generic - event ids 1006 and 1335. We disabled tcp offloading, done nic driver updates, installed various patches (KB2524478, 2552040, 2685891, 2687741, 2754804), but its still happening. If anyone has any information that can help, please let me know. Here is what is happening in the cluster log at the time of the disconnect.

How to configure SQL 2008 cluser Active /Active?
I have 2 nodes Windows 2008 cluster with Dell Equallogic SAN disks. I am trying to setup SQL 2008 ACTIVE/ACTIVE Cluster and I have got Active(cluster1)/Passive(cluster2) working. but I found a little info on the web how to configure the passive node to be the source server.
1. Do I need to create a new cluster on cluster2 with different DNS name and IP address? When I tried to create a new cluster, I typed in cluster2 DNS name and it says "Computer cluster2.xxxx is joined to a cluster."
2. Do I need to create a new domain account in Active Directory other than the one is using for the clustered SQL service?
Any help is appreciated.
