SQL database instance on passive node goes to hung state when FSW become unavailable.

Hello Team,

I have configured fail-over clustering on two virtual nodes having Windows 2012 R2 Operating system. On windows cluster i have configured SQL server SQL Server Always-On Availability groups. SQL server has 3 instances which are distributed on both servers. The cluster owner is holding two instance & passive node is holding single instance. File witness share is configured on domain controller.

Recently we faced an issue with one of the the database instance which is hosted on passive node & it went to hung state. We checked cluster events & found that during issue FSW was unavailable that lead this issue but same time the we don't find issue with owner node who is holding two database instance. Same issue had been re-occurred when we rebooted Domain Controller for Patching activity.

We have distributed these database instances on both nodes because we want to utilize both nodes as having less memory on virtual machine i.e. 8 GB RAM each node.

If i keep all the database instances on the owner node & FSW is unavailable due to any reason all is working fine.

Herewith i am little bit confused to keep database instance on single node or distributed on both node due to RAM constraint.

What will be best practice with respect to Windows Fail-over clustering ? what settings to be done at cluster side to keep alive my database instance even my FSW is unavailable ?

Please suggest.

Regards,

Vinod

Failover cluster server - File Server role is clustered - Shadow copies do not seem to travel to other node when failing over

$

Hi,

New to 2012 and implementing a clustered environment for our File Services role.  Have got to a point where I have successfully configured the Shadow copy settings.

Have a large (15tb) disk.  S:

Have a VSS drive (volume shadow copy drive) V:

Have successfully configured through Windows Explorer the Shadow copy settings.

Created dependencies in Failcover Cluster Server console whereby S: depends on V:

However, when I failover the resource and browse the Client Access Point share there are no entries under the "Previous Versions" tab.

When I visit the S: drive in windows explorer and open the Shadow copy dialogue box, there are entries showing the times and dates of the shadow copies ran when on the original node.  So the disk knows about the shadow copies that were ran on the original node but the "previous versions" tab has no entries to display.

This is in a 2012 server (NOT R2 version).

Can anyone explain what might be the reason?  Do I have an "issue" or is this by design?

All help apprecieated!

I am following this blog post and I cannot create a workgroup cluster.  I have tried using the built-in Administrator accounts and separate accounts with administrators privileges.

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/clustering/2015/08/17/workgroup-and-multi-domain-clusters-in-windows-server-2016/

Node1 is Win2016CLN01
Node2 is Win2016CLN02

I created Primary DNS for lab.johnsterrett.com

Workgroup is TSTWGP

The following is my create cluster PowerShell syntax.

new-cluster -name NoADCluster -node win2016cln01,win2016cln02 -AdministrativeAccessPoint DNS

I am getting the following error while I can access each other VM with no problems and can also ping between them successfully as well.

<g class="gr_ gr_501 gr-alert gr_gramm undefined Punctuation multiReplace" data-gr-id="501" id="501">new-cluster :</g> There was an error adding node 'win2016cln01' to the cluster
The node cannot be contacted.  Ensure that the node is powered on and is connected to the network.

Network Load Balancing IP addresses are not pinging

Hello,

I am testing NLB in a lab environment. My environment topology along with IP addresses are provided below. The environment is set up in a VMWARE 5.5 Environment.

The NLB is set up with all default and transmission mode is unicast

Problem Statement: The cluster IP and the dedicated server interfaces for NLB are not pinging from the client or from the servers themselves

Troubleshooting:

  • Firewall is down on both servers.
  • All NIC's are properly configured.
  • The ARP table was statically updated on the client to point to the cluster IP and MAC, still not working.
  • Ping from 10.192.3.200 to the below IP's time out
  • 10.192.0.226,227,115,116,117
  • Ping from 10.192.0.226 to 10.192.0.227 is working
  • Ping from 10.192.0.226 to 10.192.0.115 is working when Server1 holds the cluster IP
  • Ping from 10.192.0.227 to 10.192.0.115 is  NOT working when Server1 holds the cluster IP
  • Ping from 10.192.0.226 to 10.192.0.115 is NOT working when Server2 holds the cluster IP
  • Ping from 10.192.0.227 to 10.192.0.115 is  working when Server1 holds the cluster IP
  • I have removed all NLB's from the servers and reconfigured them. Still it is not working.
  • When transmission mode is set to mullticast, pings work, but application hosted on the NLB still doesnt connect.

Hyper V hosts and NUMA

So i have Dell R730 machines with 2 * Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2699 v3 CPU.

using Get-VMHostNumaNode

gives me

NodeId                 : 0
ProcessorsAvailability : {0, 0, 0, 0...}
MemoryAvailable        : 71415
MemoryTotal            : 130973
ComputerName           : WVISLUMWELT01

NodeId                 : 1
ProcessorsAvailability : {0, 0, 0, 0...}
MemoryAvailable        : 71468
MemoryTotal            : 131072
ComputerName           : WVISLUMWELT01

"ProcessorsAvailability : {0, 0, 0, 0...}" concerns me. Shouldnt this be something different then 0?

This is the same on all hosts.

Im currently at a loss where to look for the problem, so any tips are appreciated.

Windows failover Cluster Member OS comptibility

Dears,

I would like to know if it is supported by microsoft to create a failover cluster consisting of nodes running the same same OS version but with different edition.

Like i have two nodes running windows server 2012 R2 datacenter and another two nodes running windows server 2012 R2 standard edition.

is it supported and MS guarantees that we don't face unexpected problems.

Thanks in advance.

Cluster Aware Updating Question - patching manually and letting CAU do the reboots

$

Howdy,

We're experimenting with ways we can get out monthly patching to complete quicker on our Hyper-V clusters.  Currently it sometimes takes up to 90 minutes to patch a 3 node cluster because of waiting for each server to install the patches and waiting for all the VMs to migrate around.

We had an idea that maybe we could manually install the Windows Updates ahead of time but NOT reboot the servers.  Then we could run CAU which would see that the patches were already installed and there was a pending reboot.  Then all it would have to do is migrate the VMs, reboot, and move onto the next one.

However, we tested this yesterday and it didn't work as we hoped it would.  CAU saw that each server didn't need any patches to be installed but it also didn't see that each server had a pending reboot, so it just marked all the hosts as Succeeded without doing anything.

Is there any way that we could make this work by changing a flag or something so CAU would see the pending reboots and do them?  Or, does anyone else have ideas of speeding up patching in general of things that can be done ahead of time?

Problem creating Clustered Service - Event ID 4631

I'm working with pre-populated CNO and VCOs. The 2-node Cluster is operational. The VCO that I am trying to create fails with the "Failover Cluster Manager detected a parameter that was not in the expected range: 'Svc_Name' is already in use in the Active Directory" error. In Active Directory, I'm told that the device is Disabled (due to security requirements, I cannot review/modify AD to confirm). We followed the Technet article here, https://technet.microsoft.com/enus/library/dn466519.aspx, to pre-populate the devices in AD. I'm kind of lost here and would greatly appreciate your advice.

Hyper-V Cluster Windows Server 2012 r2 (Network Fails and autostart while Fail-Over and Draining the role)

Hi, I have configured the Windows Clustering in organization. Following detail I have mention below.

Windows Server 2012 R2 (2 Nodes)

Windows Server 2012 R2 for storage iSCSI.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Active Directory.

I have configured Clustering with Hyper-V role. I have used iSCSI storage (Configured in Windows Server 2012 R2).Cluster Validation is Successful. Main issue is when I shutdown Node 1 , VM fail over to Node 2 without network drop. But after rejoining of Node 1 in cluster I had shutdown the Node 2 .This time VM fail over to Node 1 but for a min network dropped and then it automatically started. For this I have checked the network its look fine. Let me know what is cause of this issue. First this problem was on Node 1, now it is on Node 2

Cluster Support For Applications

$

Hello Everyone,

I have three SQL applications: App1, App2 and App3.  I'm considering putting them on a SQL cluster.  Now I know the vendor supports these applications on a single server, but I'm wondering about clusters.

Do applications specifically need to be compatible with clusters OR is the SQL cluster fully transparent to applications and it should work as long as the cluster is configured properly?

I ask this because we have a SQL application on a cluster.  We're having a horrible time with it.  I asked the vendor if they support SQL clusters and they said they didn't know.  "None of our customers really use SQL clusters," they said.

Thanks in advance.

Get cluster disk type from powershell

Hello,

I would like to know if anyone know how to use powershell to get the type of a clustered disk.

From explorer's GUI, we can find the type, but cannot find any powershell to get the same info.

My goal is to use powershell to target remotely many servers at the same time and identify all the clusterd disks.

Failover Cluster Service takes extremely long to start after power outage

$

Dear all

These past weeks we have been experiencing intermittent power outages. After our UPS batteries drain our Hyper-V Cluster shuts down. However when power is restored our Hyper-V cluster takes a very long time to start up. In fact I wouldn't be able to ping it or browse the folders containing our VM VHD files. I am able to ping our Blade Server nodes. After about an hour and a half the cluster service comes back on and I am then able to manage it via Failover Cluster Manager. All our VMs then start up successfully.

Let me explain in brief our current setup. We have an IBM BladeCenter with 3 blade servers and cluster storage. One of our VMs is running as a Primary Domain Controller (PDC). However for redundancy purposes I have an additional domain controller running on a physical server and this is also hosting DNS.

What I cannot understand is why the cluster service takes so very long to initialise. When I do a netdom query fsmo I notice that all roles including that of PDC are residing on the VM Primary Domain Controller. Should I transfer all these roles to our second domain controller so as to resolve this issue?

Your comments and help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Pierre

Shadow Copy trigger failover node on Windows 2008 SP2

$

Environment:

1. 3 server which is 3 nodes

2. 1 SAN storage , setup 3 Volume (Quorum, DATA, Shadow copy storage)

3. 3 Disk add to Cluster system: Quorum (drive Q), DATA (drive D), Shadow copy storage (drive S)

4. Drive D dependencies on drive S

5. Shadow Copy Resource dependencies on drive D

Issue:

I created shadow copy service in drive D and the shadow copy storage is using drive S, every time shadow copy perform the task, my main cluster node will disconnect a few minutes (around 1-3 min) and Cluster system will perform failover to other node.

Sometime shadow copy file is created, sometime all shadow copy files will be purge. Is there anything wrong with my setting or there is a fixed on my issue?

Your reply is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Cluster node starts and stops constantly

One node of a two node cluster constantly stops and starts with the following errors. They are virtualized in VMWare.  Both nodes are on the same host and on the same subnet.  The file share witness is accessible from both nodes, permissions are full control.  I can watch the NICs fail in the cluster manager one at a time until the node goes down.  This failure only occurs with node 1.  This node has been rebuilt once by cloning the base 2012R2 server.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

File share witness resource 'File Share Witness' failed to arbitrate for the file share . Please ensure that file share exists and is accessible by the cluster.

Cluster resource 'File Share Witness' of type 'File Share Witness' in clustered role 'Cluster Group' failed.

The Cluster service is shutting down because quorum was lost. This could be due to the loss of network connectivity between some or all nodes in the cluster, or a failover of the witness disk.

The cluster Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process was terminated and will be restarted. This is typically associated with cluster health detection and recovery of a resource. Refer to the System event log to determine which resource and resource DLL is causing the issue.

The Cluster Service service terminated with the following service-specific error:
A quorum of cluster nodes was not present to form a cluster.

The Cluster Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 16 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

Adding a node and Validation Failures

Hello All,

I have 2 Cisco UCS chassis and all blades in the chassis are part of a cluster. I purchased a new chassis and I would like to bring these new blades into the cluster. I have all blades (old and new) running server 2012 R2 with hyper-v installed. I ran the validation wizard and I got one failure under Hyper-v Configuration:

<id>Validate Hyper-V Configuration Version</id>

Description: Validate the configuration versions supported by the cluster nodes and configuration version of all clustered virtual machines.

The configuration version of the following virtual machines exceeds the configuration versions supported on one or more cluster nodes.

Virtual Machines with Configuration Versions Exceeding the Range Supported by One or More Cluster Nodes

In the report it then goes on to list a few machines on each host. I have been looking at the machines and there seems to be no commonality that I can pick out from other machines on the same host that do not show up on the list. I have some hosts and their machines not on the list presumably because they don't have any issues.

If anyone knows what it is looking at and reporting on please let me know so I can correct the issues.

      Thanks,

      Scott
