Unable to create cluster, Failed to create IP Address resource 'Cluster IP Address'

I am trying to create a 2 nodes cluster on two x64 Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition servers on ( I have Dell PowerEdgeM710HD with teamed NIC cards). The cluster validation completes successfully but with couple of warnings:

  1. Node2  is reachable from Node Node1 by only one pair of interfaces. It is possible
that this network path is a single point of failure for communication within the cluster.
Please verify that this single path is highly available or consider adding additional networks to the cluster.
  2. Cluster disk 0 from node Node2 has 1 usable path(s) to storage target. At least two independent paths to storage target are recommended
    for each cluster disk.

But when I run the wizard to create the cluster for these two nodes, I get the following errors:

Beginning to configure the cluster mesmcsc.

Can someone give me best practice for this. Server 2012 Failover cluster with HA. I want to move a guest to a stand alone server 2012.

Initiator failed to connect to the target. Target IP address and TCP Port number are given in dump data.

We were finding difficulties in a Hyper V environment. Virtual Servers were running from SAN volume through ISCSI connector. If the connector fails then all Servers changed to the Saved state .This causing high end of Productivity Loss. Is there any permanent solution to fix this on Windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1.

How do I do registry replication in Windows 2012 clustering?

$

In Clustering on Server 2008, when I created a new resource, such as a Generic Service or Generic Application, one of the tabs on the properties page was for registry replication.  I have set up a Generic Service and a Generic Application on Server 2012 clustering, but they do not have a tab for this.

Does anyone know why? I can't seem to find much help when searching the internet.

Thanks in advance.

How to prevent resource type from appearing in Select Resource Types wizard page

$

Our product provides resource types with the associated resource manager and extension DLLs.  When a new group is created using the Configure Role wizard, the resource types for our product are shown on the Select Resource Types page with checkboxes.  If the user checks the resource type then an empty placeholder resource is created in the group with the name "New {resource type}".  We would rather not have this happen; our resources are a bit complex to setup, and since the IWEExtendWizard is no longer supported for extension DLLs there is no way to properly configure the resource before it is added to the group by the Configure Role wizard.  We require that our resources be added using our own custom Add Resource wizard.

Is there some way to prevent the Configure Role wizard from presenting a resource type on the Select Resource Types page?  It is confusing to our users to have an effectively useless resource appear in the group after running the Configure Role wizard.

Intermittent connection failure to email server from Fail Over clusterd Servers

Hi,

I have a weird problem. The scenario is as below:
There are two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers in Fail Over Cluster. Three cluster services are running there.
One for Tomcat, one for Apache and another one for MySQL. Anyway, the cluster services are working very well.
I configured one NIC (Broadcom) for Production Network and one NIC (Intel) for Heartbeat Network. No teaming is configured.
Servers are IBM X 3650 M3.

The problem is.. there is email alter setting in application which use the email server to send out the alert email. But when the application try to connect to email server, the connection time out intermittently. Actually email server (exchange 2010 ) and cluster servers in same VLAN.
So Network team troubleshoot and said that it may be the ARP issue. MAC address table in the router cannot resolve the MAC address of cluster IP.
I think the MAC address of cluster IP is that of physical NIC of active node. But when the cluster services fail over to another node, MAC address will change to new one, right? So I need to give them two MAC addresses for cluster IP. But I am not sure it is workable or not.

Another weird thing is ..when I tried to ping to email server or even gateway, every first ping says "Destination host unreachalbe" and subsequence ping are successful. and the same thing.. when I tried to telnet to email server port 25, every first attempt fail saying "cannot open the host on port 25" but subsequence attempt is successful.
One more thin, when I rung the continuous ping to email server and tried to telent to port 25 is  successful without any error.

So I'm now very confusing where the problem is coming from.

Really appreciate for any advice from all.

Thanks

Windows Server 2008 r2 cluster

Dear Experts,

I am going to create a win2008 R2 cluster ten install SQl 2008 R2 cluster on that.

I have 2 servers asigned Statip Ips.

I have added failover cluster feature on both the nodes and rebooted.

I have reserved 2 more IPs, for Win cluster and SQL cluster and one Service account.

I have got permission to the ad as follows

  • Create Computer Objects
  • Read All Properties permissions in the domain.

I have got 3 Luns (1 GB, 25 GB and 100 GB from the SAN Team). I dont know how to configure them. i can see them in disk mager as offline for both the nodes.

While runing the cluster validation wizard it failed to check the shared disks.

Kindly let me know what I should do to configure the disks (the detailed steps)?

Then how to configure the quorun drive?

Then what else I should do before starting the cluster validation wizard?

Please provide all teh steps in detail. I am not getting any article in teh web to configure the storage.

Thanks,

Thanks

Live Migration Hyper-v2012 fails, if snapshots are present, id 1155

Hi,

I am having an issue that live migration failed with event id 1155.

As it didn't really tell me I checked, why some worked, some not.
And it seems all machines, that had snapshots, could not be live migrated.

Once I deleted the snapshots, live-migration worked without problems.

All is stored on a cfs, also snapshots.

Is this normal behaviour (which would be odd?)

Thanks

Hi.

I have a 9 nodes cluster with WS 2008 R2 with HAVM's and a Fiber Channel SAN, I'm planning to install another cluster on the same site but another Blade Enclosure with a Fiber Channel SAN with 5 nodes.

Wich option is the best on this case?

1. Multi-site clustering joining the 5 nodes to the existent SAN

2. Independent clustering.

I hope anyone can help me.

thanks!

Guidance Clustering 2012 Domain Controller on CSV

$

Hi all,

Im in need of some guidance on best practice for Clustering Domain Controllers.

The enviroment is a 2 node Server 2012 Hyper-V Cluster, using ISCSI shared storage connected to both hosts accessed using CSV's.

My main consern with clustering my DC's is what happens if one of the nodes go down and the role is failed over, can this cause the AD database to become corrupt if the save the virtual machine state is used for the automatic stop action?

I have read that Server 2012 DC's will be ok due to the new safety features built in Server 2012 with InvocationID's, but what automatic shutdown option is best for Server 2012 DC's and Server 2003-2008 DC's?

The options availible for Auto Shutdown are:

Save the Virtual machine state.

Turn off the virtual machine.

Shutdown the Guest Operating System.

I was planning to have have 2 DC's clustered on diffrent hosts with automatic failback in place so if a host ever goes down there is always a DC availible while the other DC is failed over, would this be the best option?

Thanks

Sean

GPT volumes unknown

We have 4 TB GPT volume provided to windows 2008 r2 failover cluster. There are other volumes less than 1 TB in size and those are working fine.

Problem with 4TB LUN is it shows status as UNKNOWN in cluster management console. Volume is still accessible through windows explorer.

One more observation..in windows explorer 4TB volume appears as local disk while other cluster volumes appear as clustered disk.

Powershell Get-Cluster "A remote API error occurred"

I'm having an issue on my network where Powershell is returning the following error when invoking the command Get-Cluster:

get-cluster -domain mgmt.local Get-Cluster : Could not retrieve the list of clusters on the network. A remote API error occurred At line:1 char:12+ get-cluster <<<< -domain mgmt.local+ CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Get-Cluster], ClusterCmdletException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : Get-Cluster,Microsoft.FailoverClusters.PowerShell.GetClusterCommand

The domain name used does not matter - even a ficticious domain name results in the same error, so I can confirm that the domain controllers are not responsible for the error.

This problem only occurs when using the -domain switch.  Using -name works fine.  I unfortunately need to rely on the -domain switch so that I can get a list of all my clusters.

All the machines I've used are Windows 2008 R2 SP1 with the latest updates. I've even tried the command on the domain controller itself, same response.

I've only started experiencing this problem since yesterday.  Up till then, this command has always worked for me.  I have done no changes that could attribute to this error.

Error adding a disk to cluster

$

Hi,

I am using Windows 2012. I just finished building a 2 nodes cluster.

I want to add an iscsi disk to the cluster, so I used the iscsi initiator on both nodes to connect the disk. I initiated the disk and formatted it. I brought the disk online on one of the nodes.

When I go to add disk on the failover cluster management console, I see my disk, after adding it I get an error as status: failed, information: incorrect function. For more data see 'information Details'.

In event viewer I see:

Event ID: 1069 :

Cluster resource 'Cluster Disk 1' of type 'Physical Disk' in clustered role 'Available Storage' failed. The error code was '0x1' ('Incorrect function.').

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

Event ID: 1205 :

The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application 'Available Storage' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application.

Ebent ID: 1254 :

Clustered role 'Available Storage' has exceeded its failover threshold.  It has exhausted the configured number of failover attempts within the failover period of time allotted to it and will be left in a failed state.  No additional attempts will be made to bring the role online or fail it over to another node in the cluster.  Please check the events associated with the failure.  After the issues causing the failure are resolved the role can be brought online manually or the cluster may attempt to bring it online again after the restart delay period.

Any idea to fix the issue will be much appreciated.

Virtual Machines Blue Screening when simulating a failover

$

Hi all,

We have 2 x IBM X3650 M4 servers and 1 x IBM DS3512 storage device. We are running Server 2008 R2 Enterprise on both physical servers and have hyper-V and Failover Cluster Manager installed and configured with a cluster. We have some test VMs running server 2008 R2 and they are working fine. We are also able to live migrate from one host to the other with no issues.

The issues we get are when we simulate a network switch failure or a network card failure. If i pull the network cable out of the back of Host1, after a few seconds the virtual machines move across to host2, but they come up with blue screens, and sometimes they will reboot and say they had an unexpected shutdown.

Surely this is not by design and i am doing something wrong, but then if i do pull the NIC cable out the back of the host server the VM is sat on, how does what is in memory and the cpu cycles get transferred to the other host? They dont go through the SAS cables that connect the storage do they?

We have tried using a NIC for public access, a private nic that connects the storage and all kinds of setups with the nics but no joy. At the present time we only have one nic in each server going to a switch, and a couple of NICs in the shared storage device which go to the same switch.

Can anyone advise me if the blue screen will happen by design or should virtual machines go into a frozen state and their memory and CPU info get moved across to the other server through the SAS HBAs connected to the storage.

Windows 2008 R2 Cluster Service does not start

I am creating a Windows 2008 R2 Cluster. I have got everything installed, patched and when I try to start the cluster service I get this error saying:

"Windows could not start the Cluster Service on Local Computer. For more information, review the system event log"

Then, I go to the event log and this is the error I get. Event 7024

"The cluster service service terminated with service-specific error. The system cannot find the file specified.."

Has anyone ran into this issue and if so help me!

Thanks in advance!

iSCSI / MPIO Clustered Shared Volume unstable Windows Server 2008 R2

$

After the events from this thread:

Previous thread

Everything seamed to be working well with the exception that I was able to Live migrate a virtual machine from Node1 to Node2 but not the other way around. I had to Quick Migrate the VM to Node1 to bring it back.

After rebooting Node2 I started having the same issues as my previous thread. I cleared and reconnected the iSCSI settings for Node2 and was able to Live Migrate both ways.

I have verified that Node1 and Node2 are possible owners for the Clustered Shared Volume, I see that the owner of the CSV is Node2 so trying to move the CSV to have Node1 as owner brings the CSV down and I get the following events:

Warning Event ID 57 Source: NTFS
The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.

Error Event ID 1 Source: VDS Basic Provider
Unexpected failure. Error code: 2@01010013

Error Event ID 1069 Source: FailoverClustering
Cluster resource 'Freenas' in clustered service or application '7b8b4f53-7efd-43a4-ba79-f2979974a4a0' failed.

Error Event ID 1205 Source: FailoverClustering
The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application '7b8b4f53-7efd-43a4-ba79-f2979974a4a0' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application.

Error Event ID 5120 Source: FailoverClustering
Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('Freenas') is no longer available on this node because of 'STATUS_VOLUME_DISMOUNTED(c000026e)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

After this, the CSV will not come back online until about an hour even if I manually try to bring online.
Also all the VMs go from Running-Critical to Save-Critical to Off-Critical.

I verified the iSCSI/MPIO path is connected, all IPs can be pinged.

I am not sure where to go from here...

Total num of Node: 2

Total of LUN's: 6 (MBR)

Connector type: FC

Number of VMs: 11

Enable MPIO: Yes

Server model: HP ProLiant DL980 G7

Antivirus: N/A

======================================================================

Hi everyone recently I setup Windows Hyper-V 2012 with CSV. I configured my Hyper-V with Live migration setting. For the LUNs I configured as below:

LUN1: 500GB / 2VMs / WS2008 R2

LUN2:500GB / 2VMs / WS2008 R2

LUN3:500GB / 2VMs / WS2008 R2

LUN4:500GB / 2VMs / WS2008 R2

LUN5:500GB / 3VMs / WS2012 Std

LUN6: 10GB / Quorum

My problem is, when the CSV complete to add storage to CSV, I realize in the Node 2 under C:\ClusterStorage\Volume, one of volume appeared as folder but the rest volume look likes okay (directories icon). When I tried to access that volume3 at Node 2 the message appear I don't have permission to access volume3.

Node 1

-Volume1 /(directories icon)

-Voleme2 /(directories icon)

-Volume3 / (directories icon)

-Volume4 /(directories icon)

-Volume5 /(directories icon)

=====================================================================

Node 2

-Volume1 /(directories icon)

-Voleme2 /(directories icon)

-Volume3 / (Folder icon) -Weird!!

-Volume4 /(directories icon)

-Volume5 /(directories icon)

When I performed Live migrations for both node only Volume3 got problem migrate to one node to another node. (VMs under volume3 unable to start)

Appreciated to all expert to answer my concern.

Thanks.
